Mental Health In 2024: Addressing A Growing Crisis

In 2024, the U.S. mental health crisis continues to worsen, with rising levels of anxiety and depression, especially among young adults and women. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows an ongoing increase in anxiety and depression since the COVID-19 pandemic, fueled by economic pressures, societal stress, and global conflicts.

Mental Health America reports that nearly 18% of U.S. adults now face anxiety or depressive disorders, and rates are even higher among youth. In December 2023, the Journal of the American Medical Association found that nearly 42% of adults experienced anxiety or depression symptoms which was up significantly from previous years. Unfortunately, limited access to mental health care compounds these issues, especially in rural and under-served areas, where waiting lists grow longer and treatment options remain limited and often unaffordable.

As demand for mental health services climbs, a shortage of providers and economic barriers prevent many from receiving essential care. Although around 25% of adults pursued counseling or medication per the CDC, many who need help remain under-served. Addressing this crisis requires collective action from public health organizations, healthcare providers, and community groups. Anew Day is working to meet this growing need.

How Anew Day is Responding to the Current Mental Health Crisis:

  1. Free and Sliding Scale Services: We offer almost all of our services free of charge with certain services on a sliding scale, making mental health care more accessible for those facing financial hardship and addressing economic barriers in our community.

  2. Comprehensive Mental Health Support: Our clinic provides counseling, therapy, group support, and workshops to meet a wide range of mental health needs, helping bridge gaps in available treatment.

  3. Focus on Youth and Vulnerable Populations: Recognizing that youth, young adults, and women, along with uninsured or low-income individuals, face higher rates of mental health challenges, Anew Day tailors programs to support these groups.

  4. Community Outreach and Education: We promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage help-seeking through community education—especially important in areas with fewer mental health resources.

  5. Collaboration: Anew Day partners with many local organizations, charities, and numerous churches as well as communicating and coordinating with public health agencies to expand services and integrate mental health care across our community. Through these relationships, we aim to enhance the overall mental health landscape of our community.

Anew Day remains committed to addressing these critical mental health challenges, helping individuals access the care they need and creating a stronger support network in our community.

'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!’ (Isaiah 6:8)
